Public works

Mission

The Public Works Service cares for Val-des-Monts’ infrastructure and ensures its longevity. Always at the ready, no matter the time of day or the weather, our Public Works team plays a pivotal role in the well-being of the community.

Our greatest asset in fulfilling this mission is the pride and dedication of our professional team of employees. Some 30 blue-collar, white-collar and administrative staff perform an array of critical tasks that keep the Municipality safe and looking its best: maintain, grade and sweep 280 km of streets and roads, spread dust suppressants, keep streetlights in working order, empty public waste containers, cut grass, unclog ditches, maintain municipal buildings, clear snow and keep roughly 40 municipal vehicles running smoothly.

The type of work performed depends on the time of year.

Snow removal

Snow removal operation

A snow removal operation is usually carried out when there is an accumulation of about 5 cm on the ground or when there is blowing snow. Municipal roads are cleared in order of priority, according to their traffic and their safety. Then follow the secondary roads and finally the local roads of the residential districts. During less abundant precipitation, the employees of the Municipality carry out the spreading of abrasives on a regular basis to allow safe circulation.

It is forbidden, under penalty of fines, to :

  • Park any vehicle on the streets of the Municipality between midnight and 7 a.m., from November 15 to April 1 (inclusively).
  • Throwing or pushing snow, ice or any other object onto the public highway.
  • To erect facilities such as fences, low walls of cement, wood or any other composite material on the right-of-way of the streets.
  • Install concrete or metal markers likely to damage snow removal equipment.
  • To deposit your garbage cans, garbage and recycling bins in the public way.
