Municipalities are required by law to collect taxes.
With that rule in mind, under articles 1022 and beyond of the Municipal Code of Québec (L.R.Q., chapter C-27.1), when taxes go unpaid, a municipality can put the property in question up for sale; this recourse allows the municipality to recover the taxes and duties listed on its collection roll, specifically:
- property taxes
- duties on transfers of immovables (real-property transfers);
- all other tax-related debts.
